How will the Earth system change in the 21st century?

As the world consumes ever more fossil fuel energy, greenhouse gas concentrations will continue to rise and Earth's average temperature will rise with them. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (or IPCC) estimates that Earth's average surface temperature could rise between 2°C and 6°C by the end of the 21st century.
For most places, global warming will result in more hot days and fewer cool days, with the greatest warming happening over land. Longer, more intense heat waves will happen more often. High latitudes and generally wet places will tend to receive more rainfall, while tropical regions and generally dry places will probably receive less rain. Increases in rainfall will come in the form of bigger, wetter storms, rather than in the form of more rainy days. In between those larger storms will be longer periods of light or no rain, so the frequency and severity of drought will increase. Hurricanes will likely increase in intensity due to warmer ocean surface temperatures. So one of the most obvious impacts of global warming will be changes in both average and extreme temperature and precipitation events.
Scientists are also monitoring the great ice sheets on Greenland and West Antarctica, both of which are experiencing increasing melting trends as surface temperatures are rising faster in those parts of the world than anywhere else. Each of those ice sheets contains enough water to raise sea level by 5 meters and if our world continues to warm at the rate it is today then it is a question of when, not if, those ice sheets will collapse. Some scientists warn we could lose either, or both, of them as soon as the year 2100.
Ecosystems will shift as those plants and animals that adapt the quickest will move into new areas to compete with the currently established species. Those species that cannot adapt quickly enough will face extinction. Scientists note with increasing concern the 21st century could see one of the greatest periods of mass extinction of species in Earth's entire history. Ultimately, global warming will impact life on Earth in many ways. But the extent of the change is up to us.

HITEC University Science Society

About the Science Society

Every University is dependent upon their science society to bring new and modern ideas. Scientific society aims to provide platform for the inquisitive minds of the university. For the past three years the society has uphold the tradition of  organizing Mega events in the university which one can only dream of. The trade mark of the society is brilliance and innovation. The image of the HITEC is greatly owed to the science society for working day and night. This society has the honor winning APTEC 2011 and EMCOT technical paper competition. Every year the society organizes seminar, workshops, quiz competition and Technical projects Exhibition to provide a healthy and competitive environment in the University. Students from every department and every batch are welcomed by the society to exchange their innovative ideas with the others. This provides a team spirit among the students. The teachers also welcome the science society students, as student teacher interaction refines the abstract ideas of the students.

Participation in APTEC 2011

By being responsive to the latest innovative discoveries, students of final year Electrical Engineering Department has contested in technical paper writing competition in ALL PAKISTAN TECHNICAL PAPER COMPETITION (APTEC 2011), at COMSAT INSTUTITUE OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY, LAHORE. Four papers in the topics of image processing and smart antennas has been presented. The  paper of Nisar Ahmed Rana with title “The Application of Image Enhancement on Color and Gray Scale Images” was awarded as the “Best Paper” in the category for the postal presentation.
Winner: Nisar Ahmed Rana (Best Paper Award for Postal Presentation)

The Science Society is nocturnal in organizing mega events, which proves to be great success later on.
Such is an example of Project Expo 2010 which was organized by Science Society in Collaboration with Department of Electrical Engineering, HITEC University.

The senior most semester worked with zeal and zest to come up with an absolutely magnificent show, which proved to be a trend setter for the upcoming engineers.

The chief guest Brig. Qamar Zaman was flabbergasted at the efforts put in by the students and appreciated them.

Science Quiz

Winning Team
Bilal Ahmed, Ahmed Kamal and Shahid Rabani
I Nimrah Saeed being the Vice-President of Science Society feel honored to conduct the science quiz 2010 under the leadership of Nisar Ahmed Rana. Science quiz, being the pioneer event in the history of HITEC University, proved to be a great success. It was thoroughly enjoyed not only by the students but as well as the faculty members. It was breath taking to see the caliber of the upcoming engineers. It comprised of three teams who had to answer four informative rounds.
An hourly contest ended in a nail bitter. Each team was awarded with certificates and shields by the chief guest Dr. S Kamran Aafaq who admired the efforts put in by the science society.
